The following questions are based on the Stage 4 Technology (Mandatory) syllabus. The related outcome is in brackets.

Design Process [4.1.1]

1. Draw a flowchart to describe the steps used in the design process for the Dolphin torch.
2. Identify the design process steps forthe Dolphin torch that you could apply to designing your current project. Draw a flowchart to plan the design process you are using or will use.
3. Make a list of all the different types of people you think would use the Dolphin torch. Now list how, when and where you think they might use it. You may like to record the information in a table. Describe how this information could help the designers when they are re-designing the new torch.
4. Compare the design process used for developing the Dolphin torch with the process used to design Dinosaur Designs jewellery. What are the similarities and differences between the two processes?

Role of Designers [4.1.3]

1. Why is it important for designers to be able to work well with other people?
2. Suggest the types of training and study you could do to help you to gain employment as a product designer. Plan a time line to reveal one possible pathway you could take to become a product designer.
3. Angelo had the opportunity to complete work experience in his chosen field. Voluntary or unpaid work is another way to gain experience. How would you locate a possible opportunity for work experience, voluntary or unpaid work that would benefit your future career pathway?
4. How would using the torch Angelo designed help to make your life easier or better?

Design Specialisation [4.1.2 and 4.6.2]

1. What did Angelo and the design team do to address environmental and sustainability issues when designing the new Dolphin torch?
2. Why should designers consider the needs of people who use their products?
3. Do you think it is better to always buy the latest, newest products or to keep repairing and using older products for as long as they will function? Write a brief article to discuss this question and justify your point of view.

Graphic Technologies [4.3.1]

1. List the different types of materials used to construct the Dolphin torch or another torch that you may have. Suggest reasons why the designers selected these materials.
2. What kind of tools did Angelo and the designers use to communicate their design ideas?
3. Which graphic tools and techniques have you used in your current or most recent project to communicate your design ideas? Explain why you think these tools and techniques are the best ones to use.
